For Small Quantities of Used Motor Oil

Curbside collection of used motor oil is available for residential homes, townhomes and mobile home parks.

To recycle used motor oil and oil filters, follow these three easy steps

    1. Order free oil jugs and filter bags by calling your recycling collection company. You must use these City-issued oil jugs and filter bags which are designed to prevent leaks.
    2. Place filled oil jugs and filter bags on the curb near your recycling cart for collection.
    3. After collecting your used motor oil jugs and filter bags, the driver will leave a replacement for what is collected.

Oil mixed with antifreeze, transmission fluid or any other automotive fluid will NOT be collected.

Used motor oil and filters can also be disposed of by scheduling a drop-off appointment with the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Program.

storm drain

Don't Dump in Trash or Down Drain

Used motor oil is a major contaminant of waterways, so never dump down the drain or in the trash. Filters also leak toxic materials into waterways, which are slow to break down in the environment.

NO-antifreeze

Never Mix with Other Chemicals

Service stations will not accept motor oil that has been contaminated with other products like antifreeze. Don’t mix your motor oil with anything else.

Did You Know?

What Happens to Recycled Motor Oil

Used motor oil can be cleaned and recycled, which helps keep it out of waterways. Recycled oil is then used to make heating oil, asphalt and other petroleum-based products. It is usually not recycled and resold as motor oil.
