How Jack-o’-Lanterns Got Their Name

The name jack-o’-lantern comes from an Irish folktale. According to the story, there was a man named Jack who wasn’t allowed into heaven or hell when he died. Instead, he roamed the land with a burning coal in a carved out turnip, and became known as “Jack of the Lantern.”
